Beginner's Guide to Assisted Living 101

Everyone, at one time or another needs to decide what assisted living center their loved one, needs to go. Assisted Living 101 explains some important information that you and your family should be aware of when making your decision. First off, what is the difference between a nursing home an an assisted living home? 

Nursing vs. Assisted Living Homes

Nursing homes are medical centers for the elderly. They are cleared by the state and have doctors and nurses. Assisted living quarters contain staff that assist the elderly with daily activities.

*Citations
-There are 2 types of citations, citation A and citation B
Citation A: The most serious type of violation; it's an immediate risk to health, safety or personal rights.
--Example: Lack of care/supervision, lack of a fire clearance for building and access to dangerous chemicals, such as cleaning supplies.
Citation B: A violation that can become an immediate risk
--Example: lack of adequate staff training.

*Probation
-The period of time that a facility is required to comply with specific terms and conditions.
--This can effect the overlook of the facility, they might not follow the regulations or rules. It's best to avoid places that are on probation.

*Complaints
-Any individual who files a something against a licensed/unlicensed facility.
--This can also effect the overlook of the facility. For example, if the same compliant is filed repeatedly or there are many complaints, it would be best to find a place that has possibly little or no complaints, for the best of a loved one.

*Inspections
-The number of inspections as well as what is contained in the inspections are important because the inspectors' reviews can give a brief gist of how a certain facility in particular is. It can also show whether or not they have citations and such.

*Visits
-The visits includes the required inspections to evaluate compliance with state and regulations, complaints, and visits to investigate a complaint allegation and other visits for an administrative or follow-up purpose.
